First of all, meaning is only possible if there someone for whom there is meaning. So, if there were meaning-havers in the world, there would be no meaning. So, if there is a meaning of life itself, there can only be such a meaning for those who are alive. If there were no conscious beings, there would be no meaning.
With that said, there are generally two types of meanings: meanings we create and affirm, and meanings we find ourselves without without having chosen so. Some tend to think that we have the capacity to choose and affirm all the meanings that constitute human experience. However, that is false, since there are many meanings we find ourselves with. The fact that a song reminds one of a failed relationship, a smell reminds one of grandma's baking, or a television show reminds one of their childhood---all of these are cases of meanings we find ourselves with: meanings that strike upon us when we least expect them to.
If there is a "meaning of life", it could be either a meaning one chooses or a meaning one finds itself with. I think it is both. On the one hand, we have the capacity to choose how we live our lives, who to befriend, who to avoid, and who to become.
On the other hand, one's upbringing, environmental influences, and the people one engages with plays a determinate role in what one perceives as the "meaning of life." A person who is lonely and without friends, and who had a poor upbringing, is more likely to think life has no meaning, while those whose lives are filled with meaningful relationships and experiences would think life has meaning. And those who have those positive life-structures are likely to make the kinds of choices that will contribute to their positive sense of meaning.
So, there is no "general" meaning of life that is true for everybody, but this does not entail life has no meaning. Rather, we must speak of the meaning of "one's life" and understand it as a combination of the meanings we find ourselves with and those which we choose. Both forms of meaning mutually affect each other.
